The 6,200 square foot, single family home we have built is located at 45 Deercliff Rd. in Avon Connecticut.
The home will include a Delta®-MS foundation waterproofing membrane and the basement slab and garage floor will have 2 inches of Dow® Type IV blueboard, while the exterior walls will have 1 inch of Dow® Type IV blueboard. Basement walls and rim joists will be sprayed with 3 inches of closed cell spray foam insulation and exterior walls will feature 2X6 framing with advanced framing techniques like California corners, and insulated headers. There will also be 2 inches of 2 lb. closed cell spray foam insulation, and 3 inches of .08 lb. open cell foam in all exterior walls. Sloped ceilings will contain 10" of .08 lb. open cell foam. The Huber Zip System® with taped joints was used on the home's exterior and roof sheathing.
All sheet metal ductwork will be installed with mastic to prevent air leaks and Speedi-Boot™ registers will be used throughout the house.
Energy Saver Plus, dual Low-E, annealed glass with preserve film and Jeld Wen® argon filled, aluminum clad windows are used throughout the house. All windows will have a U-value of .27. The exterior siding will be CertainTeed ColorMax® cement siding while the front of the house will feature Seneca Buff natural stone. The south-facing roofline will have 45, Sunpower® 225 watt PV modules which will provide a 125 kW solar electric system, estimated to produce 12,000 kW of electricity per year, or approximately 60% of the home's electricity. 4 AET solar thermal collectors with a 120 gal. Superstor®, stainless steel, solar hot water storage tank will serve as the home's domestic hot water supply.
This home's expected energy use is 65.5 MMBthu per year, estimating an annual energy cost of $3,433. The initial HERS index for the home is 22.
As a specific measure related to energy efficient practices, the home was constructed facing the south to maximize the solar potential. The primary heating and cooling source for the home is a geothermal system with radiant heating in the basement slab, garage slab and on the first, second and third floors. Six, 450 ft. closed loop wells will supply the system and a 10 ton, water to water, heat controller geothermal unit to run all of the radiant heat throughout the house. Although the solar thermal hot water system will be the main source of hot water, Desuperheaters are included in the geothermal unit to preheat the home's domestic hot water. There are two, 5 ton water to air, heat controller, geothermal units for cooling and back up heating.
Excluding the land and demolition, the estimated project cost will be $1.2 million or 6,200 square feet at $184 per square foot.
This home will also be "Green Certified" by the National Association of Homebuilders. The National Green Building Certification's designer report is projecting a total of 703 points for this home and the "Green Level" achieved for this project is Gold. We are also participating in and meeting all conditions in the Builders Challenge.
