General Project Overview:

The Earle family has completed construction on their new home 4,600 square foot home in Coventry, CT. The home was constructed by Larry Nadeau and has successfully achieved ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Version 3. Energy efficiency consulting and verification was conducted by certified professionals at Comfort Systems USA Energy Services.


Orientation and Envelope:

The insulation consisted of high performance insulation using advanced framing techniques. The insulation consisted of: R-10 underslab insulation beneath the entire slab, R-21 open cell foam in all exterior walls, R-5 rigid board with R-13 batt in all basement foundation walls, R-30 open cell foam in the garage ceiling, R-38 batts in cathedral sloped ceilings, and R-49 blown-in cellulose in all attic spaces. Installed windows achieved U-0.21 and SHGC-0.190. The home was constructed using a complete air sealing approach, and the final blower door testing achieved 2.2 ACH50. Without renewables the HERS Index of the home is 38.


Heating, Cooling, and Hot Water:

The heating and cooling is provided by a 5 ton geothermal heat pump system. Two 315 foot vertical wells serve the heat pump with a heating efficiency of 3.90 COP and cooling efficiency of 17.5 EER.   Water heating is served by a high efficiency tank hot water heater which can serve as a backup heating source to the heat pump in the extreme cold.



The home features a state of the art Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) which is incorporated into the duct system for the home and delivers ventilation as required by ASHRAE 62.2.



High efficiency lighting and appliances were installed throughout the home.



An 8.58 kW photovoltaic system has been installed with an estimated annual PV production of 10,635 kWh. The system consists of 33 panels installed on the south facing roof. With the PV system installed the HERS Index of the home is 15. With the geothermal heating and cooling the homeowners will strive to reduce their energy use to reach true net-zero energy consumption over a yearly cycle.
