General project overview:
My wife and I wanted to build a house for us to be able to retire in and also raise our kids in a town we love, our goal was to be as energy efficient as possible without breaking our budget.
We built a Ranch with all of the amenities that you would find in a luxury custom built home and something we could grow old in and not worry about stairs in the future, we also built a detached 3 car garage with a home office above with matching architecture so it seems to blend right in with the house
Orientation and Envelope: (windows, insulation, framing)
We actually rotated the house clockwise about 15 degrees to ensure we had absolute southern exposure on the back of the house for solar efficiency. We did full stud cavity open cell spray foam insulation in the 2x6 exterior walls with the Zip wall exterior sheathing and air sealed the basement and attic as well as the rest of the house including R-50 blown cellulose in the attic, with stick framing for the entire house except the roof was trusses.
Heating, Cooling, and Hot Water:
We installed a 96 % variable speed furnace with a programmable fresh air intake from the outside as well as Panasonic variable speed bathroom fans. As well as a 15.5 seer Air conditioning unit and the new GE Geo-Spring hybrid electric hot water heaters that will run mostly on the solar produced by the home.
We installed the Panasonic variable speed programmable bath fans along with the programmable fresh air intake going through the furnace.
Every light and fixture in the home is LED
We installed a 17 KW designed solar PV system consisting of 41 LG 320 panels
