We chose a lot for ideal solar orientation, and put all but the minimum house-lot acreage into conservation status.  We made a preliminary design, integrating a number of elements. Our chief goals were net zero energy consumption and open circulation, as well as a fully functional ground floor for handicapped access and a full dwelling area upstairs for family, visitor and live-in uses.  Our initial references were “The Passive Solar House”, James Kachadorian  (Chelsea Green Publishing Co. 1997) , as well as the design classic  “A Pattern Language”, Christopher Alexander, et al  (Oxford University Press, 1977), and archival blueprints from  Saltbox Houses in the Historic American Building Survey, Library of Congress (http://www.loc.gov/rr/print/list/175_sal1.html )

Architect / Construction Manager: Richard Sherman, Appropriate Designs, Chaplin, CT

Richard developed and enhanced our preliminary design, creating a smart plan and an inside environment that reflects the outside environment.  He used a design/build approach that was ideal for our project. Visit his website here, http://appropriatedesigns.net
